#HOW DO YOU WIPE A MAC CLEAN AFTER MIGRATING PRO#
(The iMac is to remain set-up for the odd times when we need it and our old MacBook Pro - currently used for mobile Lightroom tasks - will be retired to home media/ web duties). In other words, while it's by no means a mess, it's not a shining example of state of the art.
#HOW DO YOU WIPE A MAC CLEAN AFTER MIGRATING PLUS#
My current set up sits on an Intel iMac which has had several iterations of OS - currently at Mojave - and various updates to the programs, plus periodic instances of 'software angst'. Having mulled the issues overnight - pre-new Mac delivery over-excitement (and now sleep deprivation ) - my reasoning and intentions are as follows: I did not enjoy going back in time to the pre-OS X era when getting a new Mac entailed an entire day (if not longer.) to get the new Mac set up the way I like it.Ī BIG 'thank you' - I'm very grateful to everyone who took the time to consider and respond to my query - I read each post and really appreciate the points made and advice given. I have used cloned volumes for data migration that were created by SuperDuper many times for over 15+ years and never had a problem. I will never trust Time Machine for migration purposes and probably anything else since I had other issues with it afterwards. (I'm going to make a donation because I've recently used AppCleaner a lot.) I already use the excellent AppCleaner from the same developer. UPDATE: I found a replacement called Tiles . I already know most of it and if I have a need to learn more, there are better ways to go about it, when it is more convenient to do so. I don't need to learn where the data is located. I am reallythankful that all of my system files did transfer over because I would hate having to reconfigure every application on my Mac, inputting licenses, settings, etc. Heck if I can remember what it is called! LOL I still need to relocate the utility I liked to use to center windows via a keystroke.
#HOW DO YOU WIPE A MAC CLEAN AFTER MIGRATING SOFTWARE#
Having all of my third-party software licenses stored in 1Password helped but I had to do much of it from memory. I had to manually reinstall everything without having done anything to prepare for it, like making logs, screenshots, etc. For some reason only one minor third-party application was transferred to my Mac. I recently did a data migration using Time Machine for the first time. Migration assistant presumably automates this stuff, but in the process, you don't learn where it is. If you do that, you will still have them if you open the same catalog, say, if it's on removable media, whereas if you don't have it checked, the settings will be in a file somewhere that you have to research. If you use Lightroom, for example, there is an option to save settings in the catalog. Things like preferences, catalog settings, various Support folders, etc. Also, I will keep a log of all the different things I need to do to get back to where I was. I will be doing a clean install, since I'm keeping my old computer. Migration doesn't clone a machine it's a new machine for these purposes. You'd have to de authorize and sign out of the old machine in order to authorize it on the new one for LrC or Ps. How is a "clean install" different than migrating in that context?Īnd some programs like Adobe's are licensed depending on seats or computers. I may have left it a bit late to bring this up… Thank you in advance for any advice or guidance, including from anyone who has faced a similar situation.

This route would probably lead to some fiddling around to restore our set-up customisations, but I'm thinking it would also provide the best install process specific to the new machine. I'm minded to do a clean install - all of the programs allow multiple installations/ uses (to varying degrees - I'll also be updating PLE to version 5 on the new M1 at some point).
#HOW DO YOU WIPE A MAC CLEAN AFTER MIGRATING UPDATE#
(The bulk of our data/ back-ups reside on various external drives and the iMac is backed-up via Time Machine - a recent update melt-down proved this works!). These are currently installed on my ageing iMac and either I, or my wife, will still be using the above programs with this machine from time to time in the future, so they will need to remain valid and useable - and I'm not certain whether this would be the case if I used the Migration Assistant. My new M1 based MacBook arrives tomorrow and I've been mulling over whether to use the Apple Migration Assistant, or do a clean install - primarily in relation to my photo processing software - Adobe Creative Cloud, DxO PL4 Elite and all of the Topaz Photo Programs.
